SFDA Highlights Dual Benefits of Breastfeeding for Infants and Mothers

Coinciding with World Breastfeeding Week (August 1-7), the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) highlighted the importance of breastfeeding, emphasizing its extensive benefits for both the child and the mother as a fundamental reason for their comprehensive physical and mental health.

In its awareness campaign, the SFDA explained that breast milk is the ideal food for the first months of life. It is easily digestible and perfectly suited for a baby's stomach size. It also enhances immunity with antibodies transferred from the mother and reduces the risk of allergies, asthma, diabetes, and anemia. Breast milk supports healthy brain and body growth in the baby and helps prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) during the first months.

The SFDA noted that the benefits of breastfeeding extend to the mother as well. It has been shown to reduce the risk of breast and ovarian cancer and osteoporosis. Additionally, breastfeeding aids in healthy postpartum weight loss and accelerates the return of the uterus to its normal size due to the release of the hormone oxytocin.

To maximize these benefits, the SFDA recommends several key practices, including beginning breastfeeding within the first hour after birth; relying solely on breast milk for the first six months; feeding the baby as needed, without adhering to a strict schedule; maintaining a balanced diet, drinking adequate fluids, and getting sufficient rest; and consulting specialists when facing any breastfeeding difficulties.

This campaign is part of the SFDA's ongoing efforts to raise health awareness, support safe and natural nutrition options, and contribute to building healthier and more resilient generations.
