SFDA Conducts a Study on ‘Cork Cups’

SFDA stated that it conducted a study on some  of the plastic packing and wrapping materials available in the local markets including  poly citrine foam ‘crock’ cups with code , used in making coffee and tea cups to verify whether they comply with the respective specifications.

The study concluded that the percentage of migration of chemicals from packing and wrapping materials, under the maximum possible conditions) is very low and does not present any hazards to  the health of the consumer.

SFDA pointed out to item no. 4/18 of the GCC standard specifications no. 2013/1863 entitled : ”Food Materials Packages” stipulating that ‘ The concentration of mono-citrine in the plastic material shall not exceed 1% by weight, in non- fatty food stuff and 0.5% in fatty food containers made of poly- citrine or refined poly- citrine’

Also, item no. 4/21 stipulated that :’ The percentage of migration shall not exceed 10mg/sq.dcm  or 60mg/kg of the packed food stuff’ for all plastic material in contact with food, and that the rate of migration depends on the temperate o food stuff used by the consumer and the duration of contact with the packing  material.
