The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) has emphasized that while sodium has a role in vital bodily processes and cell functions, high consumption of salt is associated with health risks. The World Health Organization recommends that adults limit their salt intake to no more than 5 grams per day, approximately one teaspoon.
SFDA has highlighted that many food additives contain salt with different names, and it is essential to identify them to determine the salt content of the product. Examples of such additives include sodium, sodium phosphate, sea salt, sodium nitrate, baking powder, sodium benzoate, sodium bicarbonate, and monosodium glutamate.
To reduce salt consumption, SFDA recommends reading nutritional labels and selecting food products that are low in sodium or have no added salt. Additionally, SFDA suggests using healthier alternatives to salt, such as lemon, vinegar, herbs, and spices to enhance flavour while cooking and eating meals.
High levels of sodium can lead to various health risks, including heart disease, vascular disease, and stroke. Incorporating some daily changes can have a significant impact on overall health. Some of these recommended practices include preparing food at home and avoiding purchasing fast-prepared foods high in salt, such as instant soups, instant noodles, processed meats, pizza, canned foods, sandwiches, cheeses, chicken broth cubes, potato chips, and mayonnaise.
