SFDA CEO Launches Electronic Integration Project to Enhance Drug Safety

The CEO of the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA), H.E. Dr. Hisham S. Aljadhey, launched the Electronic Integration of Medications Risk Minimization Measures with a number of collaborating hospitals. The launch took place on the sidelines of the Global Health Exhibition, held from October 27 to 30 at the Riyadh International Convention and Exhibition Center in Malham, under the theme "Invest in Health."

The initially participated hospitals in the Electronic integration included King Fahad Medical City, King Saud Medical City, Security Forces Hospital, King Abdulaziz Medical City, and Johns Hopkins Aramco Healthcare. This integration allows these hospitals to participate directly and effectively in enhancing patient medication safety by implementing risk minimization measures, positioning them as leading healthcare facilities committed to best practices in the safe use of medicines.

The Risk Minimization Measures (RMMs) integration project is a national initiative launched by the SFDA to enhance the safe use of risky medicines. This project provides essential educational and guidance materials for healthcare practitioners and patients, with the aim of reducing certain serious side effects.

The project aims to integrate Additional Risk Minimization Measures (aRMMs) into hospitals’ electronic drug dispensing systems to ensure their delivery to targeted healthcare professionals and patients, enhance their implementation, and ensure safety . It also seeks to significantly raise healthcare professionals’ awareness of the risks associated with risky medicines.

The SFDA explained that the results of the project's first three phases, implemented from 2023 to 2025, have already demonstrated a significant improvement in physicians' awareness of risk reduction measures, and have contributed to facilitating access to them for both patients and healthcare practitioners.
