SFDA Launches an Initiative to Enable Healthcare Professionals and Patients to Access Awareness Materials that Promote the Safe Use of Medications and Help Minimize Related Risks

The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) has launched an initiative to empower healthcare practitioners and patients by providing access to approved educational and awareness materials that promote the safe use of medications and reduce associated risks. This is achieved through the addition of a “Risk Minimization Measures” page on the dedicated electronic portals for medical personnel, reflecting effective integration between the SFDA and healthcare institutions across Saudi Arabia.

The initiative has received a positive response from many healthcare facilities, which proactively integrated the link into their internal systems. This reflects their commitment to expanding awareness and enabling their medical staff to have continuous access to approved information and best practices in the field of medication safety. This collaboration demonstrates the health authorities’ dedication to supporting pharmacovigilance systems and participating in raising community awareness, which constitutes a fundamental pillar towards improving the quality of care and enhancing medication safety nationwide. Furthermore, this effort is part of one of the SFDA’s strategic projects, titled “Risk Communication for Medicinal Products.”

So far, 10 hospitals have engaged with this initiative, including King Saud Medical City (First Health Cluster), King Abdullah Medical City in Makkah, King Fahd Medical City in Riyadh, Medical City Hospital at King Saud University in Riyadh, Sultan Bin Abdulaziz Humanitarian City in Riyadh, Johns Hopkins Aramco Healthcare Center in Dhahran, Umluj General Hospital, Security Forces Hospital in Riyadh, Dammam Medical Complex Hospital, and the Regional Drug Information Center in Tabuk.

Healthcare institutions are encouraged to share the authorized risk mitigation resources via their internal communication platforms to increase awareness about the safe use of medicines, safeguard patient well-being, and support effective treatment outcomes.
