The third meeting of the Heads of National Medicines Regulatory Authorities (NMRAs) of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Member States concluded today. Held in Riyadh from December 17-18, the meeting was chaired by H.E. Dr. Hisham S. Aljadhey, CEO of the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA).

During the meeting, the "Riyadh Declaration" was issued, which calls for enhanced cooperation and harmonization among member states. The declaration emphasizes the development of robust regulatory capabilities and the establishment of effective systems to ensure the quality of pharmaceutical products while maintaining vigilance in monitoring these products post-marketing. By raising the level of regulatory maturity, the goal is to provide safe pharmaceutical products for all.

The declaration further highlights the importance of sharing knowledge and building human capacities to enhance the scientific efficiency of drug regulatory authorities and optimize resource utilization. To combat counterfeit medicines and ensure the quality and safety of pharmaceutical products, the declaration stresses the need for integrated efforts among member states and the adoption of advanced digital technologies and artificial intelligence.

Additionally, the declaration underscores the importance of adopting effective and safe regulatory systems that keep pace with evolving technological changes without compromising product safety, as well as fostering innovation in biotechnology.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the heads of the NMRAs from OIC member states expressed their gratitude and appreciation to the Government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, represented by the SFDA, for hosting this successful meeting and its excellent organization, affirming their support for the Kingdom’s presidency of this two-year session.
