French health authorities ban cosmetics containing vitamin K1 (phytonadione)

The French Health Products Safety Agency (AFSSAPS) has announced a temporary ban on all cosmetic products containing vitamin K1 (INCI name: phytonadione; common name: phylloquinone; CAS: 84-80-0).

The prohibition of this substance in all cosmetic products placed on the French market follows the notification of twelve adverse reactions over the last two years, six of them being considered as severe. All notified side effects are allergic reactions independent from the product dosage and have resulted in a permanent sensitization.

Cosmetic products containing vitamin K1 (phytonadione) are therefore considered unsafe for use and are subsequently prohibited from being manufactured, imported, packaged, sold or offered on the market. The ban takes effect as soon as the decision is published in the Official Journal. Concerned companies must take all necessary measures in order to cease the distribution and withdraw all products containing vitamin K1. The ban is to be applied until appropriate measures are adopted by the European Union.

Vitamin K1 (phytonadione) is a fat-soluble vitamin that is stable to air and moisture but decomposes in sunlight. It is found naturally in a wide variety of green plants. It is commonly used cosmetic products in particular those fighting skin redness but also in other product types such as certain: moisturizers, facial treatments, acne treatment, anti-aging treatments, foot treatments.
