SFDA Laboratories Enhance Readiness to Ensure Pilgrim Safety During Hajj Season

icon

The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) has announced the full readiness of its laboratories for the 1447 AH Hajj season. The SFDA has implemented intensive operational plans to safeguard pilgrims and enhance emergency response efficiencies related to food and drug safety. These measures include 24/7 laboratory operations and increased capacity to manage the high seasonal workload, all while maintaining the highest international standards.

SFDA laboratories receive and analyze samples submitted by field inspection teams while conducting urgent testing to ensure pilgrim safety. They also support epidemiological investigations into suspected food poisoning cases and monitor operational performance indicators. Current metrics highlight that the number of requests has reached 465, with 857 samples processed and 1,856 tests completed, reflecting high operational efficiency and rapid response during the season.

To further expedite results, the SFDA has implemented the "Fast Track Mechanism." This initiative ensures that samples are received, sorted, and analyzed within one hour of arrival, allowing for immediate preventive action during emergencies.

The SFDA utilizes advanced laboratory technologies and equipment, including: Genomic Analysis Technologies to identify pathogens and accurately trace sources of infection; Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) devices for the rapid detection of microbes; and ELISA systems for the reliable detection of toxins and food poisoning agents.

Beyond diagnostic testing, the SFDA is active in specialized research. In close cooperation with relevant entities, the Authority is conducting safety evaluations and analyses of ready-made meals, directly enhancing the regulatory food safety standards for meals served to pilgrims.

The SFDA adheres to the highest standards of quality and biosafety throughout all stages of laboratory operations, utilizing data analysis to support informed decision-making. These operations are conducted through seamless coordination with relevant entities, directly contributing to the health and safety of pilgrims.

Such initiatives reflect the Saudi leadership’s unwavering dedication to serving pilgrims and mobilizing all necessary resources to ensure their well-being. Furthermore, they underscore the SFDA’s mission to intensify measures that safeguard pilgrims throughout the Hajj season.
