SFDA Leads Digital Transformation in Drug and Cosmetic Safety Regulation

The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) continues to advance a new phase of regulatory innovation through comprehensive digital transformation initiatives aimed at enhancing drug safety, pharmacovigilance, and strengthening oversight of cosmetic products.

In a recent report titled “Pioneering Digital Transformation in Drug and Cosmetic Safety: Saudi Arabia’s Regulatory Innovation Journey,” SFDA outlined how it has integrated Artificial Intelligence (AI), Computer Vision, Natural Language Processing (NLP), and Robotic Process Automation (RPA) into its regulatory systems to bolster public health protection and accelerate regulatory procedures.

A key highlight of this transformation is the modernization of the National Pharmacovigilance Center (NPC), which has transitioned from paper-based reporting to advanced digital systems capable of real-time data analysis. The adoption of RPA technology has improved data accuracy, reduced processing time, and enhanced the efficiency of detecting potential safety signals.

At the same time, SFDA launched an e-learning platform and integrated Additional Risk Minimization Measures (aRMMs) into hospital information systems to promote safe medication practices across the Kingdom. Additionally, the Saudi Name Registration (SNR) system was introduced to prevent medication errors and ensure the distinctiveness and accuracy of pharmaceutical trade names.

Looking ahead, SFDA is preparing to expand its digital transformation to include the cosmetic products sector through AI-driven initiatives. These include systems for analyzing product images to identify violations, tools to verify ingredient compliance with regulations, and NLP-based platforms to monitor emerging health risks from consumer reviews and feedback.

These initiatives demonstrate SFDA’s strong commitment to leveraging advanced technologies in support of the Saudi Vision 2030 and the National Digital Transformation Strategy, solidifying the Kingdom’s position as a regional and global leader in digital health regulation and consumer safety.
